Consider/Approve Application for Approval of Special Course – ACT Test Preparation

Background Information:

Any class, which is not specifically within the State Board of Education’s curricula, requires special permission to teach. The attached applications request permission to teach an ACT Test Preparation class at Obion County Central and South Fulton High Schools. As stated within the applications, our ACT scores have lagged behind both the State’s and the Nation’s average scores at all levels of ACT testing. Through this dedicated class, our objective is to improve the testing skills of our students, not only on the ACT test, but also on all standardized tests. The applications set forth the justifications, the nature of the course, the goals of the course, the materials that will be utilized, and the proposed instructional methods. The Board and the State must approve this course for three (3) years prior to it becoming a regular part of our curriculum. Board approval will constitute the third (3rd) and final year for Obion County Central High School and the second (2nd) year for South Fulton High School.

Staff Recommendation:

I recommend approval for Obion County Central and South Fulton High Schools to continue to offer and teach an ACT Test Preparation class during the 2010 – 2011 school year. Teaching these courses will not require additional personnel.
